When you think about Thanksgiving, you probably think about turkey and gravy or maybe your mom’s homemade pumpkin pie. You might add football to the list of things you’re looking forward to or maybe you’re a fan of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. 

There are probably lots of wonderful things that come to mind when you start thinking about Thanksgiving. But we’re willing to bet that kitchen drains are not among them. 

We’re not suggesting that your drains should be the center of your holiday celebration. We’re just saying you might want to give them a thought before you get too caught up in the festivities because Roto-Rooter reports that the number of calls they receive for kitchen jobs increases 50 percent on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Go with the Flow

You might not be able to ensure that the conversation at the table flows smoothly (seating cousin Lauren and Uncle Hal at opposite ends of the table might help), but there are things you can do to help keep your drains running freely.  

Meal prep and clean up can be problematic for your kitchen drains as some foods tend to clog up the sink – in fact, a lot of the foods on your Thanksgiving table should not be put into the disposal. 

Roto-Rooter provides these Thanksgiving tips to help you remain clog-free for the holiday:

• Never pour fats, grease or cooking oils down the drain – unless you want to see your plumber. They will solidify in your pipes.
• Don’t put stringy, fibrous or starchy waste like fruit and potato peelings, celery or, perhaps the worst thing, turkey skin in the garbage disposal. Your disposal is not equipped to sufficiently break these materials down.
• Make sure the disposal is running when you put food into it. Don’t wait until it’s full before turning it on. Run only cold water through a disposal to avoid overheating the motor.

 

Best foods to dispose of in the trash can:

• Hard foods, such as bones and fruit pits
• Poultry skins
• Cooking oil
• Starchy foods, including stuffing, rice and pasta
