Long-Term Support Needed to Help the Bahamas Rebuild

When you look at pictures of Grand Bahama and Abaco – the two islands in the Bahamas most affected by Hurricane Dorian, you can see that at this point there are precious few roofs to repair. In fact, there are hardly any buildings standing. Roof builders won’t be needed until new homes and businesses start to go up to replace all that were destroyed by the Category 5 storm.

As a roofing company in Palm Beach County (which is less than 100 miles from the Bahamas!) we notice these things. And we know, from our experience, that it is going to take a long time – a very long time – to rebuild the communities that were wiped out by the unbelievable power of the hurricane.

South Florida has responded to the incredible needs of the people in the Bahamas with an outpouring of generosity that is truly wonderful to see. There is still much to be done to make sure that all those who lost everything have clean water to drink and a safe place to stay as well as clothing and toiletries, but the relief organizations are now in place.

Looking Ahead

The communities in the Bahamas that were affected by Hurricane Dorian are going to need long-term support to rebuild. That’s where the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, a 4-star charity and trusted philanthropic partner of Google and Facebook, comes in.

The Center for Disaster Philanthropy established the 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season Recovery Fund. This fund allows donors to give now to support recovery needs that will continue to surface long after the media have moved on to the next big story and our attention is once again directed toward the demands of our day-to-day lives.

Recovery after a major storm like Hurricane Dorian can take many months, if not years. The CDP 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season Recovery Fund, much like CDP’s other funds, will focus on medium- and long-term recovery needs from Hurricane Dorian – and any other storms that may still threaten South Florida.

Among the long-term needs that the CDP 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season Recovery Fund will address are:

  • Rebuilding homes and livelihoods
  • Meeting the needs of vulnerable populations
  • Supporting mental health services; and
  • Addressing pressing needs that will arise after immediate relief needs are met.

If you would like to contribute to the long-term needs of the people in the Bahamas, the 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season Recovery Fund is a really great opportunity. And you’ll be in good company. The CDP 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season Recovery Fund has received generous support from, among others:

  • The Patterson Foundation
  • The UPS Foundation
  • Columbia Sportswear
  • New York Life Foundation
  • And countless individuals who have stepped up to support the communities affected by Hurricane Dorian.

And remember, the 2019 Hurricane Season is not over.
