How to Safely Hang Outdoor Holiday Lights

We may not have to deal with snow here in Palm Beach County, but your roof can still be adorned with icicles. At Christmas time the world lights up – quite literally! Neighborhoods are transformed into glittering wonderlands, with homes adorned with hundreds of pretty lights, some more elaborate than others.  The professional roofing contractors at Boca Raton’s Integrity Roofing want to remind you that hanging holiday lights can be tricky and mistakes, costly, though.

While sparkling and magical, those lights require some forward planning. Here are some do’s and don’ts to keep your roof – and you – in good shape. After all, you don’t want to be calling out a Delray Beach roofer – or a doctor! – in the middle of Christmas dinner!

  • Do NOT walk on your roof!

Hey – you’re not Santa Claus so stay off the roof when you start hanging up your lights. Instead use a ladder. This could save you hundreds in roofing bills if you caused any damage not to mention medical bills, if you were to slip and take a fall.

  • Do have someone with you

Whenever you use a ladder, especially on a two-story home, it’s always advisable to have someone with you. This person can guide you on where to hang stuff and stabilize the ladder if needed.

  • Do test your lights

Before lugging them up the ladder, test your lights to see if they work. You don’t want to go to all that trouble only to find half of the lights are duds!

  • Do NOT use nails!

Please avoid using nails, staples or screws to fasten your lights as they can damage the roof. You can buy clips or hooks especially designed to hang on the gutters, and they don’t leave any marks. This way you can use as many as you like and go to town with the festive lighting. If you do accidentally puncture the roof, you can always call up Integrity Roofing, a full-service roofing contractor in Boca Raton.

  • Do set a timer

Avoid leaving your lights on all day and night and instead plug in a timer. It’s safer and more energy efficient.

Enjoy safely lighting up the world for yourself and others, and the guys at Integrity Roofing and Waterproofing, one of the most trusted and experienced roofing companies here in Palm Beach County, all wish you a happy and bright holiday season.
